Gillian King

Location: Newton Mearns & Online

Associate Counsellor

Who am I?
I’m often described as a ‘people’ person! After completing education, I pursued a career in Financial Services and Marketing where I enjoyed engaging with diverse individuals. I subsequently began volunteering with the NSPCC School’s Service, which led to a role as a Classroom Assistant. While this position was dynamic and rewarding, I sought a way to support students more profoundly and embarked on a journey into Psychotherapy. With extensive experience in counselling, including relationship counselling, I possess a keen understanding of the courage it takes to open up to someone new. I strive to create a welcoming and compassionate environment for those seeking support.

Her Approach

Gillian's approach to counselling focuses on creating a warm, safe, and non-judgmental environment where clients feel heard, understood, and valued as unique individuals. She aims to walk alongside her clients on their journey of self-discovery, helping them build resilience and achieve their goals.

Gillian is trained in Integrative Psychotherapy. This means she is able to draw on a multitude of Counselling Modalities including Person Centred (Non-Directive therapy), CBT (Directive therapy), Transactional Analysis (Looking at Communication Patterns) and Psychodynamic (Making links between childhood and current behaviours). This allows her clients the benefit of a flexible, tailored approach depending on their needs at any one-time during therapy.

Experience and Training

Gillian holds the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills and is currently working towards her Postgraduate Diploma in Relational Counselling. She is also a member of COSCA and receives regular supervision to support her ethical practice.

Gillian brings a broad range of life experience including:

• Infertility, IVF and Donor Conception
• Premature birth
• Carer experience for family members with severe Physical Disabilities/Alzheimer’s
• Loss and bereavement
• Anxiety/Phobias
• Relationship issues

In addition to her Counselling training, Gillian is a Member of The Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland and holds the Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice (CeMap). This allows her a solid understanding of the pressures of working in the Corporate Sector.

For relaxation, Gillian enjoys art, music & walking her whippet in the Ayrshire countryside.
